Table of Contents

The Root Chakra, also known as the Muladhara, First Chakra or Base Chakra is associated with stability, security and the survival instinct. The Muladhara governs our relationship with the Earth, with the name originating from the words mula "root" and "adhara" meaning "support".

When our Muladhara is open and balanced, we feel protected, safe and at ease in the world and in our physical body. However, the Root Chakra can easily become blocked or unbalanced when we experience feelings of anxiety or insecurity.

When that happens it’s important to engage in Root Chakra healing to address the imbalance and restore a healthy energy flow.

In this article we discuss everything you need to know about the Root Chakra look at different tools you can use to balance your Root Chakra.

What is the Root Chakra?

The chakra system is an energy system originating from Hinduism and Buddhism spirituality. The system has seven primary chakras: the Root Chakra, the Sacral Chakra, the Solar Plexus Chakra, the Heart Chakra, the Throat Chakra, the Third Eye Chakra, and the Crown Chakra.

As the name suggests, the Root Chakra (also known as the Muladhara, First Chakra or Base Chakra) represents the fundamental base or “roots” of the human body and our strength and stability in the external world. The Root Chakra is an earth element and it is associated with the color red, reflecting its connection with earth.

It is also believed to be the source from which the three main psychic channels or nadis arise: the Ida, Pingala and Sushumna. Before working on healing a particular chakra, it’s important to ensure your Root Chakra is healthy and balanced since this is the foundation on which all the other key chakras are based

The Root Chakra relates to all our basic physical requirements, for example food, drink, shelter and safety, as well as our fundamental emotional needs such as freedom from fear and anxiety, and mental stability. This is why we feel grounded and comfortable when we have a balanced Root Chakra.

Imagine your mind and body is like a home - when your home is built on strong, secure foundations then it will be stable and reliable for many years to come, allowing you to focus on other challenges in your life.

Where is the Root Chakra?

The Root Chakra is located at the base of the spine. Due to its position in the body, it is generally connected with our lower body health including our digestive system and pelvic area.

Causes of Root Chakra Imbalances

Any experience which creates feelings of anxiety or insecurity can cause a blockage in the Root Chakra. For example if you experience abandonment or are exposed to a volatile environment or relationship this could lead to lasting trauma which manifests itself in the Root Chakra.

Some believe that the Root Chakra also holds a connection to the spiritual energies of our ancestors, and through this connection will feel the challenges and difficulties that they too faced.

Regardless of your background it is likely that all of us will encounter an imbalance of our Root Chakra at some point in our lives.

How do You Know if You Need Root Chakra Healing?

It is possible to have an underactive Root Chakra or an overactive Root Chakra. When Root Chakra energy is low it will often manifest itself as fear, such as anxiety and worry about work, money, health or relationships.

An individual with an overactive Root Chakra can also experience fear however it will often manifest itself in other ways such as paranoia, defensiveness, aggressive behavior or greed.

If you think you could have an imbalance in your Root Chakra, it’s worth carrying out this simple exercise.

1. Sit down in a quiet, safe space where you won’t be interrupted.

2. If you’re sitting on a chair make sure both feet are on the floor so you feel grounded. If you’re sitting on the floor, make sure your spine is tall and you are sitting on your sit bones.

3. Close your eyes and take some deep breaths

4. Once you feel relaxed, begin exploring the following questions in your mind. Try to be honest with yourself:

  • Do you trust those around you?
  • Are you content in your job?
  • Are you content in your relationship
  • Are there any areas of your life that are worrying you?
  • How are you sleeping?
  • Do you have any anxiety or uncomfortable emotions around eating?
  • Do you feel worried about the future?

As you work through these questions, you will be able to identify if there are any areas in your life where you feel insecure or unsafe and if there are any behaviors which could be indicative of an unbalanced Root Chakra.

A healthy flow of energy from the Muladhara Chakra results in feelings of empowerment, security and a sense of peace - the basis on which every other chakra is built.

When your Root Chakra is balanced you are likely to experience a sense of safety throughout your entire body. This helps to lay the foundations for you to undergo personal growth.

How to Balance Your Root Chakra

There are many different Root Chakra healing methods. Here are some key grounding practices which can be very effective.

The first step towards healing is acknowledging that your soul, mind, and body require your help and support.

Analyze your relationships and experiences, both past and present, to identify any issues that could be causing you feelings of anxiety or fear.

You can then work through these experiences with the help of a trusted friend or therapist if helpful. Journaling can also be a powerful method of self-analysis and Root Chakra development.

Root Chakra Yoga Postures

Yoga can be a great way to connect with your mind and body, and release unwanted tension.

Yoga poses or yoga asanas which are focused on your back and pelvic region are particularly beneficial for healing your Root Chakra. These include Sun Salutations, the Mountain Pose, Tree Pose, Squat Pose, Warrior Pose, Goddess Pose, and Child Pose.

If you're unsure, speak to a yoga teacher who will be able to talk you through suitable yoga sequences that you can adopt as part of your yoga practice.

Spend Time with Mother Nature

Walking outdoors (known as earthing) is a powerful tool to ground the human body and reconnect with the natural world. This works particularly well if you walk barefoot on grass or sand if you live near the beach.

If you enjoy meditation, why not try walking meditation so you can benefit from nature as you practice. During the summer you could also try outdoor yoga.

Positive Root Chakra Affirmations

You may find that self-affirmations can help focus your mind on working through emotions and challenging negative thought patterns. Self-affirmations can be spoken out loud at any time of the day, or you might choose to repeat them silently to yourself during meditation.

You can also say them at the end or beginning of your yoga flow.

These affirmations work particularly well for the Root Chakra, but you can always come up with your own:

  • I am secure
  • I am fearless
  • I have a strong sense of self
  • I belong exactly where I am
  • With every breath, I release the anxiety and fear within me
  • I am safe in my body
  • I can always take care of myself
  • I love my body and trust its wisdom
  • I am comfortable being in the present moment

By repeating these statements, you can establish new thought patterns and challenge your mental habits.

Root Chakra Healing Meditation

Meditation is a powerful way to calm your mind and help you connect to your subtle body. There are many different ways to meditate, but the best root chakra meditation involves the following steps:

  • Choose a peaceful spot where you won’t be distracted or interrupted
  • Get comfortable. You can sit on a chair, sit on a cushion on the floor or lie down - just try to make sure you have good posture
  • Close your eyes and begin to take deep breaths
  • Begin by focussing on your Root Chakra and the emotions you want to resolve
  • With each breath, imagine a wheel turning and expanding as you release and expand the life energy within your Root Chakra

You don't need to meditate for a long time when you are first starting out - just a few minutes will be beneficial.

You can empower your Root Chakra healing meditation further by using aromatherapy, chakra candles and Root Chakra stones to help you focus on your Root Chakra.

Sandalwood, cypress, cedar, rosewood, patchouli, clove, black pepper, and ginger are all scents which are known to help us connect with our Root Chakra. Burning a Root Chakra candle with one of these scents, or using aromatherapy oils while you practice can be very effective.

Crystals are another useful tool to help you connect with your Root Chakra. You can use them in various ways, including storing them at home, wearing them as jewelry, or placing them on your body as you meditate. Red jasper, hematite, smokey quartz, carnelian, garnet and black tourmaline are all used for healing the Root Chakra.

Sound Vibrations

Every chakra is connected to a distinct sound, also known as a bija or seed mantra. Sound causes vibrations in the body, and these vibrations help with the flow of life force energy in the body and promote emotional stability.

The bija mantra associated with the Root Chakra is “Lam”. By chanting “Lam” repeatedly, the vibration caused is said to activate the Root Chakra energy center. You can also listen to Root Chakra healing music to create these vibrations without chanting.
